Dry Needling

What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a technique used to treat muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction. It is an invasive treatment technique which involves inserting a needle into your skin and the underlying tight muscular regions or myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are painful when stimulated and can refer pain to other areas of your body. As the name suggests, the needles are inserted dry and no substance is injected into your body.

How does dry needling differ from acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a technique which follows traditional Chinese medicinal practices, where needles are inserted into the body in specific, predetermined points that fall along meridian channels which help energy flow through the body. In contrast, dry needling is based upon Western ideas of neuroanatomy and the musculoskeletal system and does not use meridians to determine where needles are placed. In dry needling, the physio inserts needles into myofascial trigger points in order relieve pain.

What common problems can be treated with dry needling?

Dry needling can be used on a range of musculoskeletal problems where pain and swelling occurs. Some of the conditions treated with dry needling include:

  • Chronic Low Back Pain
  • Acute and Chronic Tendonitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Headaches
  • Pain occurring from muscle trigger points
  • Muscle tightness
